  • Windows 7 Upgrade From RC to Final Version of Windows 7

If you've been running Windows 7 Beta, Windows 7 RC (release candidate), you may wonder if you can upgrade to the official version of Windows 7.

Perhaps this is because they feel that the final version of Windows may have significant differences in the beta or RC version that would make a problematic update. Perhaps its legitimate version of the operating system will begin to close in March 2010 when the betas are set to stop working.

The official response is: yes, you can upgrade a beta or RC version of Windows to install the RTM version.

To do this, you have to download the RTM version of Windows 7 ISO, mount the image in a virtual DVD drive, copy it to a local folder, then make some modifications to the file cversion.ini.

There are a few things to think about before considering an upgrade.

First, as mentioned, there could be problems if you upgrade from the RC to the final version of Windows.

In addition, a clean installation is generally preferable to an upgrade.

Yes, it's a pain to set up a new system.

Moreover, when you create a new installation, is more likely to do so in a way that best suits the new operating system.

This does not apply to those going to the final RC for Windows 7, of course, but take this into account if the update of Vista or XP.
